Welcome gamers. Through a series of short essays, I will teach you how to build compelling worlds for your RPGs.

I’m assuming you play RPGs for at least this reason: you want to have fun telling a story. You probably play for a lot of other reasons as well (hanging out with your buds, rolling dice, solving problems, executing plans, eating), but you at least want to tell a good story.

Not everyone at the table is equally stimulated by the creative process, but you all have imaginations and you like using them. Why else are you pretending to be an orc? World building is a creative endeavor. It exercises your imagination muscle. And if you like creating, then you know how rewarding it is to make something awesome. Shoot, you probably enjoy the process as much (or more!) than the product itself.

If world building feels like a chore, then you are doing it wrong. You are a creative, imaginative person, so enjoy! It’s going to take a lot of work, but it’s going to be worth the effort.
